  DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY

arly photography in Latin America shares an interesting relationship with the work of traveler-artists of the 19th century who painted picturesque scenes. Photos of local types in costume were popular subjects for postcards in the late 19th century, and included gauchos on the Argentine pampas and the women of Lima in pleated skirts and black shawls. The subjects of photography were often portrayed to match existing stereotypes.
